  I never went to film school, so I watched this 

  and I would say that the insidiousness and ugliness and preposterousness of Dixon and Griffith’s mythico-historical apparatus— one that leverages beauty and a naive historical record in service of white supremacist ideology—is unbelievable

  and yet this very apparatus is still at work in the American imagination today
