The main antagonists are the nazis and the Catholic Church, it involves some very interesting themes of personhood and humanity, and despite the self admitted pervyness of the writer the women in the show are actually allowed to be powerful characters with their own autonomy and impact instead of (or in some cases in addition to) being a sex object, it’s not the greatest, but compared to most anime’s it’s pretty decent.
