Gruesome still authentic and engaging with a subtle realistic tone that sets a disgusting environment, perfect for a serial killer’s doing on the loose. Akin’s direction is superb together with Dassler’s performance and an incredible photography, taking us back to a monotonous and rusted 70’s Germany.
A deep, well-thought portrayal of one of the most disturbing and complex cases of US criminal history, depicting a story of injustice, inequality, social rejection and the pain endured in a woman's soul after suffering from the darkest yet most real features of society, including those where males are wild predators who deem women not as their equal but as birds of prey, vulnerable, weak and submissive.
Charlize Theron's performance and personification are sublime, not falling into the mocking/emulator game…

Surrounded by an incredible photography and set, together with costume design and recreation, it does not climax or develop. Pearl’s character together with her mother’s could have been more explored and exploited. Dialogues fall into simplicity and turn dull sometimes. Although Goth’s performance can be versatile, it gets monotonous and the plot never seems to get its peak. What is more, gore resembles the absurd and psychological devices are displayed at its very simple. Mia’s portrayal gets annoying at times because of body language. It is something you watch when in search of a flat plot with a good use of camera and design.
