Cure 1997
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
A desperate, chilling dissection of the psyche muddling the barrier between physical and psychological.
Evilness isn't something unattainable, the more you look the more it grows. But it's always been inside, waiting. Japanese society and its feigned politeness, cross-examinated by the hidden anger beneath. Cure interrogates the self and its shaky morality during its 2 hours of runtime. There is never a sense of calm, the film's haunting nature amplified through continuously eerie sound design. Both Koji Yakusho and Masato…

Horrors of Malformed Men 1969
A feverish, visually stunning adaptation and combination of Edogawa Ranpo's works.
Beginning as a classic break-out identity assumption story before tumbling into the full weirdness of its source material. It's a wondrous tale of self-exploration, a beautiful wedding between the novellas, and the idea of wrongness.
It's brutal, subjecting the viewer to the psychological rather than the physical violence Ishii often displays, and the narrative threads are kept difficult to connect. The themes of forced conformity and hiding one's wrong…Translated from by

Helvetica 2007
Helvetica as the reason behind both the Vietnam and the Iraqi war.
Hustwit illustrates the reception of the all-encompassing typeface through the lens of the industry. He never adds his own commentary, or gives a comprehensive history lesson on the font or typography itself; rather let's designers speak out themselves. There isn't one opinion, not one option presented as to whether the viewer should or shouldn't like the typeface.
The montage fits wonderfully. Having the interviews dispersed with street filmography…

You'll Never Find Me 2023
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
I know you've lied to me, but I don't care.
What an intense, atmospherically striking feature debut! While You'll Never Find Me ends up as a fairly predictable thriller, it still manages to build and keep strong tension. Through both sound design and strong lead performances, as nothing happens it feels constraining and creepy. There isn't a moment of calm or peace, every little thing, every lie and motion build up pressure.
Limiting itself to only a few rooms and…

Angel's Egg 1985
You have to break an egg to know what's inside. Annihilation is the precursor to rebirth.
A frail, last vestige of hope after the crater left behind by the atomic bombs. The fair-coloured girl and her mission to protect the egg, the strong imagery of pregnancy as she carries it on her stomach, contrasted in front of the dark and dead backgrounds. A nuclear winter that's fallen over the world populated only with old machinery, dead leviathan bones and past…

9 Souls 2003
Prison as punishment, a way to get rid of the convicted, rather than to rehabilitate.
Toyoda creates a new ragtag band of societal outcasts, nine people who've been effectively erased from life. Each of them entirely different from one another, the relationships between them unique. There's this very human part trapped behind their crimes, be it love, fascination, kindness or self-hatred.
9 Souls balances dark comedy with human drama, following the escapees' attempts to enter a normal life. It's a…
