"Lemony Snicket sci-fi" is the best description I've seen. Overproduced, waaaay too much exposition, you get the movie within the first 5 minutes and no other ideas are explored at all (despite there being several interesting possibilities). There's funny moments at least, but nothing more than a chuckle.
