  Eli Roth seems to have an obsession with trying to make a cult classic. Too bad he can’t direct something coherent without a thousand different things happening and lots of characters with lots of different names doing said things constantly. Somehow it felt both rushed and too slow, lazy (in its plot) and innovative (in its plot/kills) all at the same time. I laughed on occasion.

  Beautiful production design, just great to look at the whole time. But it does feel like everything that could be emotional or immersive or allow me to connect with anyone at all is taken away by often hollow performances (I understand that’s part of “the point” but sometimes I could see stronger performances coming out and wanted more of that rather than the stilted dialogue, akin to Gene Hackman’s interpretation of this style in The Royal Tenenbaums), title cards, and…
