Ginger and Fred 1986
So wildly underseen and I think misunderstood. Nothing about Fellini’s savage satire of Italian commodity culture reads to me as cranky or even pining for nostalgia. It’s clear that Fellini knows the extravagance and decadence of the 50s/60s Italian culture that he immortalized was just as rotten, but it too contained beauty in the dirt. Simple Passion 2020
this film has burrowed under my skin. it’s simplicity is deceiving— like the scent of a perfume that you remember but can’t quite place, it lingers, disturbs and shifts in your memory. as a portrait of desire and it’s rabid consumption, it is incandescent.

El primo 2012
Marco Berger is a poet of the homosexual gaze— I have never seen another filmmaker, even in pornography, find such sensual, mysterious beauty in the outline of a man’s crotch. His best work hums with a slightly dark electricity, a danger lurking just on the edges of lust and desire. And yet, even in a short as brief and lithe as this one, he always manages to pull the rug out from under you.
