An infuriating film. Academia is important and so is partying, but booksmart tells us this that these are the only pursuits to be balanced in a young life. Perhaps these girls should have strengthened their friendship and found fulfilment in a high school sporting setting, rather than rattling through a night of empty debauchery. The movie shoots for laughs and frivolity, when it could have been quiet and serious. The long shot in the pool should have been replaced with a reverent study of the empty bleachers of the school baseball field. I’m at my wit’s end.

Rocketman 2019
This film was marketed extensively with an image of a man in a baseball uniform. I figured the film was a feelgood tale of a minor league slugger and his route to the big leagues - turns out he’s some kind of music guy? Managed to get my ticket money back for false advertising. I imagine many others have done the same.

mid90s 2018
Jonah hill, star of Moneball (2011), turns his hand away from professional organised sports to the disorganised chaos of amateur skateboarding. The main charachter is compelling enough but I find the whiteboi wish fulfilment of underage drinking and drug abuse to be a far inferior coming of age trope than the wholesome battle of boys becoming men inside and outside of the diamond. Wake up Hollywood! Those are the stories we want to see!

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World 2019
Seeing a film at the cinema is truly the only way to experience your favourite feature. Unfortunately, I found it incredibly difficult to enjoy Moneyball on my tablet with the sounds of Dragons and child-friendly, comedy warfare piercing through my noise cancelling headphones. Cinema staff were also very rude, even after I explained that my off-brand tablet doesn’t have a camera feature. 2 stars
