i've never seen a studio ghibli movie that attacked it's concept in such a head on manner (although I think grave of the fireflies is probably similar in its approach). and god it paid off. firstly, to be able to address where life begins and ends in one instance of world building was clever asf. it also served to not overcomplicate an admittedly complicated concept. i think the mechanism of the plot is what allowed this world and its functions…
