Isabelle Huppert is the auteur of this movie. just pure response, her presence so weighted and possessed that nothing else exists outside of the frame. in the book she disappears into a crack; in the film, the last word is murder…
I read that the morning it was going to be screened at a theatre in ny a few years ago, she called the person introducing it (Rachel Kushner) to say that this film was one of her best “souvenirs” as an actress. "in fact, maybe my best souvenir" (using souvenir to mean memory, I love her). this movie is my Wanda.

when I first watched this in August two years ago, it was in the sunroom with the windows open during a torrential downpour. my skin felt sticky in that end-of-summer way I like. the film itself was languid and sticky, uneasy, and so sexy. I was falling in love with the person who wrote me to watch it. after the movie and the rain, I went into my notes and wrote down these thoughts:
