paced w/ impeccable restraint but why did it end like that…?

Fell in love with the first two adaptations of this story and kinda felt the honeymoon phase dissolving as I watched this one. I didn’t love the theatrics of horror throughout having been more impressed by the 1979 adaptation (more subdued but still got the same point across). Lily Rose Depp was convincing in her demonic possessions and young love. She had a perfect neck for the role. I thought Nicolas Holt was a great choice as well. He played the pussy-whipped, distracted, yet faithful husband well. Skarsgard was sexy and disgusting.

The attention to aesthetic continuity between this and the original film astounded me. I was captivated by the ever so slight variations. Felt like a little secret shared between me and Herzog. Kinda like a reoccurring dream, from a different/ matured vantage point- so many sensations of familiarity and surprise. Not unlike the feeling of falling more deeply in love.
