It’s an okay Sunday afternoon watch but nothing special. It leans into Munich to add some gravity to the narrative, without really explaining or mythologising it enough to earn the right to do so, so it all feels a bit crass. It’s also enough about United to put off fans of other clubs while not being enough about United to mean anything to United fans.
P.S. Why does the final whistle always blow in football films straight after the winning…
I was on the verge of tears at least twice watching this. The fact that as a lifelong football fan so much of this has been hidden away from me, and millions of others, in the name of the patriarchy and masculine greed is just disgusting. These incredible women laid the foundations for our heroes today; may they never be forgotten. Copa ‘71 is a must watch for all football fans.
I really wanted to like this so much, and I just didn’t.
I’ve never seen the stage show, but I have seen The Wizard of Oz. So that’s my background coming into this.
So, first of all, the film is called Wicked absolutely everywhere, apart from in its own opening credits - where it’s called Wicked: Part One, which was a nasty shock for me ten minutes in to find out that I was watching a 2hr40 adaptation of 1hr15…
