One of the best documentaries to ever live. This intimate portrait documentary unravels the stories we tell ourselves about ourselves through the lens of our fathers. Billops uses peformative, poetic, and observational modes of storytelling to examine Suzanne and her relationship with her mother that create an environment for refusal to conform to generational trauma and stigma. This portrait of Suzanne and her family ages so gracefully and sits as a timeless piece. It’s a short that I wish was a feature. A masterpiece. A thoughtful blueprint for what style of refusal looks like.
