Beautiful performance from Daniel Day Lewis, and Paul Dano. Due to it being a adaptation from the book there are some noticeable gaps in terms of character development; enough to be making a note of it.

Characters are fun but that’s about it. Wasn’t invested in the story or journey of the characters. The tropes/structure stood out like a sore thumb especially towards the second half of the film.

Jokes felt forced and in an attempt to be funny (many jokes splattered time and time again throughout the film) just missed the mark. Often the found portions of the film that weren’t obviously attempting to be comical, got a chuckle out of me.

This film absolutely excels when it comes to the subtle nuances of storytelling. The Art Direction, use of color and contrast are all combined to create a visual story that is both beautiful and compelling.

The main characters were written well with solid inner and outer goals. My only vice is I’d like to know alittle more about the maybe the mother, but definitely the father. We don’t really get to know about him outside of the trauma the family…
