Ralph Fiennes does a great job as Odysseus, and the overall atmosphere of the movie is nice. But it lacked something. Every hint of divine influence has been taken out of the story, causing certain things to no longer make sense. This caused the story to feel a little hollow, and compared to other interpretations of the story, this one felt like it lacked a certain meaningfulness.
Bulgakov's story is good, and this movie stays quite close to it. It is a fine movie, but I was not that impressed.
For 1925 this is a very impressive production. It is very bombastic, and full of action. Like many early soviet movies, it has a very obvious ideological message, but what I did not like was that it was so clear immediately from the start. It was constantly so clear what Eisenstein wanted to say with his movie that there was little suspense left in that sense. Overall I found it an intersting watch more than an enjoyable one.
This late-Soviet era adaptation of the Hobbit is cinematographically unimpressive, does not have particulary good acting, doesn't do special effects really, and is overall just a pretty clunky production. But it is very funny, it's got character, and I have rarely seen a movie with a better dragon. It's just over an hour, and well worth a watch, especially since it's available for free with English subtitles on Youtube.
