As an autistic black man who’s also made documentaries on autism I found this film quite refreshing! It’s not revolutionary filmmaking and it is way too short, but it is very pro-neurodiversity, and it also includes the voices of neurodiverse people of color. Also while it includes the voices of parents/caregivers of autistic people, I believe it avoids the usual tropes of centering their voices over autistic people.
Also I did not know Spike Lee was neurodivergent, but it totally makes sense in retrospect and I love that he got to talk about his experiences in this.

People just don’t flirt like they used to.

I know it’s a victim to its time but I hate that Poitier and Carroll are sidelined. Feels like so much was cut. Love the atmosphere and the witty dialogue though. And the jam session with Louis Armstrong is so electrifying and something everyone should witness.

As an autistic I feel like this is something everyone should watch to see how personality test can be used to uphold ableism and other types of bigotry to bar marginalized people from opportunities. However, I did like how it didn't judge individuals who use them solely as a way to find community and self understanding instead of a way to harm others. For example, there's nothing wrong with believing in astrology but if we used it to determine who gets jobs or basic human rights that would obviously be fucked up.

I thought this was a well put together short. I liked how the father was portrayed as patient and wanting to care for his son without trying to force neurotypical standards on to him. My parents while loving weren't as patient, but as a Black Autistic I still found it somewhat relatable. I wonder what other Black autistics think?
