Perhaps as good as a biopic could possibly be, especially one concerning an art form and an artist so complex. Maestro is also one of the most comprehensive and neutral studies in film of the question of love-relationships between homosexual men and heterosexual women, and is brave enough to ask the viewer whether this aporic type of romantic union might be a necessary part of American cultural production.
A fun and pretty spot-on exploration of cynicism, faith, demagoguery, and dictatorship. Aesthetically and thematically innovative for its time.
Some pretty random creative choices and a slight lack of subtlety make this remake/adaptation good as opposed to great, but it’s still worth watching. The film is certainly very pretty, and its depiction of Vichy Marseille with 21st-century costuming makes for a necessary and jarring visual statement on what fascism could look like again.
