The Substance 2024
After Barbie, did we really need another film about perfect women hating and self-harming themselves for not being perfect? It's filled with kubrickesque imagery, it blazingly enjoys it's feminist core, the whole body of script bulges out of it's undetailed intricacies and it's already bloated in a balloon of self-fondness. Directly from Cannes, it's almost in the air that next overbaked Oscars contender just arrived. And it will be talked on par with Julia Ducournau's Titane and early Cronenberg.

With Keaton's Beetlejuice screentime finally doubled, I've finally caught some laughs. Old teams' reunion is a gift we have never asked for, as original never promised a redemption for it's weak writing, yet Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, assembled around family farewell gathering, surprises with grotesque side-step characters and beatifully expands underbudgeted ideas from it's predecessor.

Not to say that I'm dying to see Scott's director's cut that is 4 hours 10 minutes long, but this one was a total misfire. Having lifeless cold-blue palette and showy battle reimaginations with some pictorial restorations of scenes from paintings (like that one with Crowning) doesn't make it a good movie.
