Another angle to Kore-eda’s constant exploration of family relationships, and one of his best films.
This is probably the most emotional premise among his work, but the performances are still kept simple and effective, much appreciated in the current state of over-the-top screaming performances in tear-jerking japanese blockbusters.
Try not to get too distracted by the “what would I do in their place?” and try to connect with each character instead. This is neither an exercise of moral judgement nor a guessing game. There is no correct answer— you’re just here for the ride
This film didn’t get a lot of buzz when it was released but I think it’s worth watching if you have a chance.
Great pacing and mood setting that build that good old “supernatural or psychopath?” suspense in a satisfying way. The premise is creative enough and there is some originality it has some scary moments.
I would not call it a masterpiece, but it brings value to the modern landscape of horror cinema.
The script felt like a smooth ride, yet each scene had substance in it. One treat after the other.
It made me laugh, but not because it was sprinkled with jokes— humor was a natural result of it all.
Everyone in this movie is very good at being weird.
