This commercial was very successful at convincing a new generation that it’s okay to like (and buy) Barbies. Gerwig’s serpentine rhetoric bends over backward to exclude anyone outside the hyperfemme paradigm from view. Putting words of aspersion in the mouth of cynical teenagers (who go in to adopt hyperfemme presentation) was a tricky maneuver to mask the tired third-wave gender hierarchy, again, as liberation.
