Just a pretty good time honestly. Watched with my parents and they loved it. Worthy addition to ‘bunch of people hanging out’ genre. Kind of insane ensemble cast. V silly jukebox soundtrack. Goldblum being creepy is funny. Cloyingly sentimental towards the end but I think it does a good job of lightheartedly grappling with aging / loss of idealism / the transition from 60s counter culture to Reaganism. If I was feeling particularly annoying / generous I would maybe argue that…
Feel like the plot was conceived of in about 10 minutes, annoyingly structured for no obvious reason, uses violence weirdly, as in it feels unbelievable and unwarranted. Wants to be taken seriously while depicting a sequence of events and actions which are hard to justify or understand emotionally. Simply no sense of who these characters are or how they actually feel. Why did they cast a 32 year old man as a teenager??? It’s not technically ‘badly made’ I guess?…
Undoubtedly a stinker. Lazy-feeling, tail end of 90s rom com boom. Found all the peripheral characters annoying / anonymous (even Joan Cusak!). Sad bc the screwball edges are good, it kind of comes to life during the actual wedding set peice but that’s about 5% of the running time. There’s a good idea for a film here, like if they’d told her story sequentially and gone through each wedding instead of using clumsy wedding video flashback device. Found Gere’s character being ‘blown away’ and ‘seriously impressed’ by the lamps Roberts’ character makes v funny for some reason.
