Expertly written characters with the tight, witty dialogue Wes Anderson is know for are hampered storytelling that is often directionless. But the characters are directionless too so maybe it was intentional...
The movie equivalent of a baseball player striking out and their coach telling them they can try again, only for them to hit the ball and get thrown out on the next play.
When a movie about concert drumming can engrosse someone who has never even held a pair of drumsticks before, it has done it's job well. Although none of the characters are particularly likable, it was a pleasure to watch each of their journeys. Your heart will be beating as fast as the drums most of the movie despite the fact it doesn't even contain any explosions.
Hugh Jackman knocks it out of the park on this one, taking control of every scene in one of the coldest, most dour movies I have ever seen. The film drags a bit in the 3rd quarter but the conclusion almost makes up for it. I would have watched it 10 times over if it hadn't rattled me so much the first time.
