    La Dolce Vita

    the quintessential roman film

a dark, cynical, yet realistic portrait of rome and the decay of both morality and happiness in the pursuit of materialism. quite ironic that gift shops in rome carry so much merchandise pertaining to this film when the movie highlighted so much ugliness existing within roman society. beautifully shot and lots of layers to analyze, easy to understand the praise for this italian masterpiece.

    Mulholland Drive

first film of the year! very unfortunate that it’s a bit of an in memoriam watch for the great david lynch

the only lynch work i’d seen before this film was the first season of twin peaks, and that’s already full of his signature surrealism and dreamy-like quality. mulholland drive takes that surrealism and cranks it from 10 to 1,000. at the moment though, a bit too much of a mindf*ck to process (it’s almost 4am).

rip david lynch, you surrealist genius

    70mm at the vista theater

a loaded film with the storyline of an epic size and the intimacy of a quiet drama. many good and ambitious ideas but in my opinion a meh execution for the second half.

bonus points for running into phoebe bridgers

edit: after sitting with the film for some time, i now think the second half is more put together than i originally felt coming out of the theater. still not nearly as good as the first half, but not a bad film overall
