The dots never quite connected with this one. Its vision and purpose were a little lost on me. I kept looking for the moment where the “lightbulb comes on” so to speak, but even as the credits rolled, I was still searching. In other words, there just wasn’t enough payoff for me. Mark Ruffalo’s performance was *way* too on the nose for my liking. Don’t get me wrong, I have no personal issues about what he and Bong Joon Ho were going for, but the parallel just wasn’t even clever, it felt cheap. Pattinson was good as always. Just a little disappointed overall.

I don’t even know where to begin with this one. Don’t get me wrong, it’s absolutely a David Lynch film through and through, but one that seems to juxtapose his typical ethereal dreaminess with this weird atmosphere of degeneracy, speed metal and sex addiction. Who knows, maybe it’s not all that out of left field for him. Either way, I loved it. Also, turns out Nic Cage is kind of the perfect star for a Lynch movie. His outlandish bravado felt very necessary to such an off the wall story. Weird, disturbing, kinda funny at times. Stand-out flick for sure.

Honestly just as fun of a flick as I had remembered, also with some good jokes sprinkled in that went over my head as a kid, which you gotta love. Great cast, some comedically bad effects, very becoming of the low budget Robert Rodriguez vibe. I did think the villain tug of war between Alan Cumming, Tony Shaloub and Robert Patrick was not quite necessary but this is by no means a movie that’s meant to be the subject of hard critiques. Overall, this movie does its job well. Great kids action with silly slap stick comedy and fun nods to spy clichés.
