A poetic, yet heartbreaking portrayal of how the patriarchy, reinforced by all of us, corrupts young boys to fear intimacy and leaves them with a masculinity where the only acceptable expressions of self are through anger and violence.

Oldboy 2003
I could probably write “what the fuck” and just be done with this review but this is the darkest movie I’m probably going to watch again (and again). It does such a good job with foreshadowing and there are some really iconic scenes/shots you could probably see replicated in your favorite movies. Amazing, in the most uncomfortable way. Would recommend (followed by therapy).

Tangerine 2015
This earlier Sean Baker film is impressive not only because it was filmed on iPhones but also because of its unique story and characters. Certainly flows like a student film but I’d say its authenticity makes it worth watching and it’s entertaining at the least. Many storytelling elements can also be seen in his more recent work in Anora, which makes it interesting to watch in hindsight.

Grave of the Fireflies 1988
One of the best movies I’ll never rewatch. Brilliant. Absolutely gutted. Even worse knowing the short story this is based on was written as a personal apology to the author’s sister. You know to strap in when they spoil the ending at the start just to make it hurt less.
