Gaslight 1940

This is the original gaslight.
Remarkable for its glimpses of early 20th c. london. (Bobbies wore top hats??)
I think both versions are hampered by the campy jewel sub-plot. Abuse like this happens everywhere and no jewels are needed.
This film is still effectively terrifying, but the '44 version is more tightly written.

Alison Jannie will deservedly win best supporting actress.
Robbie was forgettable and 2D. The script - variously about truth, betrayal, slapstick comedy, abuse, persistence, passion - was all over the place; would have been better to pick a theme or a single event and focus.
