Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

    ★★½

Splattered with unconvincing CG and a cavalcade of unlikeable characters, Dial of Destiny struggled to retain my interest. Honestly the most noteworthy aspect was perhaps the surprisingly convincing CG used to create a young Harrison Ford in the opening action scene.
The film seems to have a similar problem to a number of modern Hollywood VFX-driven films: these overlong cgi-heavy effect sequences that go on forever, and are probably sent off to the overworked effects studios before the script is even…

A knock-down, drag-out monster rumble the likes of which hadn’t been seen before! Riffing on the classic vibe of the 60’s kaiju eiga, GOTU finds a compelling middle ground between its believability and the more outlandish elements of the genre that it fully embraces. Perhaps one of the most successful revivals of any character returning to the big screen, the only major drawback is the characters being just a bit dry, but there’s enough happening to keep them involved and the performances are really solid (especially our dear Inspector Osako!)

The Revenge of Iris offers the end to what may be one of the rarest of creatures: a trilogy that gets better with each entry. Shinji Higuchi’s visual direction and Kaneko’s crackerjack storytelling make for a kaiju film with a blistering amount of emotional depth. It also remains the most visually impressive kaiju movie to come out of Japan to this day, utilizing a near perfect blend of CGI and traditional Suitmation effects. As a capper to the best kaiju films made in the 90’s, G3 might just be the true King of the Monsters.
