One of the stars is for the soundtrack, which may be the best movie soundtrack in all of recorded history. Rushmore has some very funny moments (the scene in the restaurant where Jason Schwartzman tears into Luke Wilson is sublime)—and is really well acted, but it gets demerits for major cringe. Miss Cross puts up with adolescent Max sexually harassing her multiple times. Margaret Yang is okay with getting sloppy seconds. Black people suddenly appear when Max goes to public…
A surprising cassock-and-dagger thriller. There is much geezering and speechifying, and the final required twist on a twist is slightly undercut by moralizing. Bonus, though: if you’re fond of cinematographical tableaux that look like they belong in a museum that steals artifacts from south of the equator (“Nuns in Blue Wimples Descending a Staircase,” “Cardinal Without Umbrella on the Piazza”) this is the movie for you.
Also, turtles.
