This is a fantastic Halloween movie. Based on ghost stories by R. Chetwynd-Hayes, the sets, lighting, atmosphere are dripping with heightened goth campiness. The stories have the little-kid-nightmare-logic of closets leading to haunted castles and old bearded men jumping out of mirrors. Also Donald Pleasance acts alongside his daughter Angela Pleasance in a story that must be seen to be believed. It looks like someone deepfaked his face into a little girl.

Watched this and “The Boogeyman” from the same director Ulli Lommel & writer/actor Suzanna Love this month and was really impressed. Low budget 80s supernatural horror that manages to give its characters a surprising sense of inner life. These are the movies that A24 would push past the finish line 40 years later, but it’s pretty inspiring to see this kind of offbeat introspective horror being produced off-the-grid and against all odds before there was a place for them.

I watched this one a while back when Knives Out came out and I was looking for similar cozy whodunnits. I enjoyed it okay the first time (I remember thinking “Sleuth is better”), but rewatching it with my wife I really appreciated the twists and turns the plot took. There were two or three points where she screamed at the well executed misdirections this movie trades in, and I realized Deathtrap is better appreciated as a group watch-along movie. Also, wow Christopher Reeve! This is probably by favorite movie of his now.
