Memories of Murder is exactly as intended. It is evidence of a master filmmaker in complete control. However, Bong Joon-Ho’s thriller frustrates through the deliberate ineptitude of its characters. The look of the movie is undoubtedly marvellous; the idyllic fields, the ensemble staging, the way the killer is shown to disrupt the natural order of the world.
The issue is that without closure, you cannot help but feel that you have been fed red herrings for over 2 hours. But then again, that was exactly as it was always meant to be.
This is undoubtedly a cinematic masterpiece. An anachronism in the sense that it is a Greek tragedy which unfolds in setting of a grungy early-2000s Korea, Oldboy has garnered cult status for clear reason. Infinitely stylish, slick and shocking, this is an absolute must-watch. Just pick who you watch this with carefully.
A passable character study salvaged by Ethan Hawke’s sublime performance. Despite being strong thematically, the film suffered from a plodding first act, deliberate but imperfect cinematography, and disinteresting supporting characters around Hawke.
