The trans experience felt like a plot device rather than a way of saying anything remotely meaningful. This is something real people experience every day, not just an inciting incident.
I’ve retroactively gone back to give this 1 star instead of 2. It’s so backwards and regressive and implies by the end that Emilia Perez was in disguise the whole time from her “true” male self.
I remember somewhat enjoying the lead up to the surgery, but the second half is just horrific. I don’t think I’ve watched a genuinely harmful film like this before…
Zoe Saldana is great though.
