  So this film is essentially a 2-hour music video for an 80s-era prog-rock anthem, but with much better acid, lighting and effects. I like the idea of it, and the moments that stand out, better than the experience of it in its entirety. Unfortunately, my expectations for the film were a bit high from what I'd heard about its uniqueness and absurdity and, as is often the case, I think my expectations may have distorted my experience.

  This is both garbage and, for better or worse, a hyper-postmodern work of capitalist realism. I'm still unsure if Korine is critiquing late-capitalist malaise or just endorsing nihilism and hedonism as perhaps the only appropriate or available response. Regardless, I think it works as both and is similar to Spring Breakers in this way. I didn't think it was particularly funny and it tried my patience at times, but there was more to unpack than I was expecting.
