The Aviator 2004
Feels a little disjointed at first but really clicks into place for me in the last 3rd or so. There’s a couple of pretty bad CG sequences peppered in there, and I thought Leo’s work was a touch uneven at times, but he mostly plays it super tight and controlled here. None of the usual salivating and screaming his performances sometimes devolve into, so big thumbs up for that 👍

There Will Be Blood 2007
It’s kind of hard to measure this against my memory of it from when I was teen, but it’s still pretty incredible. Mean-spirited, deeply sad, but still manages some deep empathy and comedy (The part at the end where Dano says “[The Lord] has completely failed to alert me to the recent panic in our economy” got me so good). Capital vs. spirituality, both vying for the heart of America but both are lies told by charismatic hucksters

Den of Thieves 2: Pantera 2025
Actually sooo much fun. Take all of the already not-so-subtle ideas of Heat and put insanely bright spotlights on them (I love when Gerard says “It’s like we’re part of some weird…. Symbiosis 😏”). The scene where they do molly and the whole mid-section where it becomes kind of a shaggy hang-out movie is pure delight.
