I love the Las Vegas vibe of this movie, and I adore the way the Elite Hunting Club has stepped up to using technology and allowing live audiences to come bet on the torture of their victims. It reminds me a lot of those deep web "red rooms", and I like those vibes. However, the acting and plot in this movie are weak. There's a crossbow though, and those are my favorite weapons, so that's nice. Plus, the scene where…

This is my favorite Hostel film and second favorite horror movie of all time, although, like the first one, it doesn't really want to be a horror movie in any traditional sense. The concept of these movies is disturbing because it doesn't seem entirely implausible that American tourists could be kidnapped and tortured for money overseas. I liked that the main characters in this movie were women. The gore was still strong, although there are a couple of scenes that look super fake.

This movie is a pioneer of the torture porn genre. SAW, one could argue, is a technically better horror movie, but Hostel doesn't want to be a horror movie; it wants to be a slasher, a splatterpunk film, torture porn. Every SAW movie is good, but this one is actually pretty weak. There wasn't a whole lot of action, the traps - aside from the Reverse Bear Trap - were lacking, and upon rewatching it recently, it was way more boring than I expected?? The psychological aspect had potential, I guess, but it wound up just being two guys whining for the most part and I wasn't invested. Also, Cary Elwes' voice kept going from an American accent to a British one and that was very distracting.
