Portrait of a Lady on Fire 2019
A tender, sensual depiction of an affair between a painter and her subject, Portrait of a Lady on Fire uses its core triad of female characters to explore massive themes that still permeate society today; responsibility, servitude, perceptions of femininity, and temptation. It would be easy for POALOF to get lost in its own romantic poeticism, but the film remains grounded throughout, quietly delivering an immensely moving story about love, and friendship.

Hirokazu Kore-Eda’s fourth feature film Nobody Knows is an unflinching commentary on innocence, youth, and responsibility, following four siblings, Akira, Kyoko, Yuki, and Shigeru, struggling to survive in a small Tokyo apartment after having been abandoned by their mother.
The usual tropes of a Kore-Eda film are in full effect here – soft, intimate lighting (the director makes an effort to light his scenes as naturally as possible, giving all of his films a dusky, twilight opacity), stunning cinematography lingering…Translated from by
