Great Noir that starts off as a rather quick and schmaltzy love story before the obsessive love of the wife Ellen leads to her pushing away her family, killing Dick’s brother, Danny, and unborn baby. Scenes set in rural Maine, New Mexico and the east coast are so picturesque but in some cases painted backdrops. It made for a v upper class white American slice of life. 3 men return from war and try to reintegrate. Homer deals with disability, Fred deals with a wife who he doesn’t love and Al deals with alcoholism. The plot was great and made you really care about all the characters. Two different love stories between Homer and Wilma and Fred and Peggy. Their successes felt earned. The difficulty in entering society without skills or hands or a new sense of responsibility to fellow soldiers was really well depicted. First academy award success with a disabled actor? Teresa Wright again playing an amazing part in the love story.
Great end of war plot, a la Casa blanca, set in casino outside Europe and meeting old flame. Bad boy becomes sort of good. Rita heyworth was great lead, and drove the flirting tension perfectly. Cartel subplot worked well as a way to drive plot forward but was muted and didn’t interfere with the central story. Hair flicking and music numbers from Heyworth throughout increased the sultry flirtatiousness.
