Black Bag 2025
I really admire how much Soderbergh’s movies delight in slowly revealing themselves to the audience. I’m not just talking about plot twists, often they seem to get a real pleasure out of unveiling the depths of their premises. You think you’re in store for a simple genre exercise, and then he pulls the rug out from under you and shows you that you’re actually tangled up in something much thornier. He’s a real showman, a cinematic magician. Not to the mention the world’s most productive retiree!

Film about the most boring relationship of all time! It’s not even boring in an interesting way. Florence Pugh plays one of the most accomplished people alive while Andrew Garfield is the human equivalent of a cotton ball — is that the foundation of a compelling relationship? Didn’t care what happened to either of them at any point, and got absolutely nothing out of this whatsoever. In lieu of popcorn, bring a pillow.
