A Real Pain had all the right ingredients for a solid hollywood flick: two cousins on a pilgrimage to Poland in honour of their late grandmother, a holocaust survivor. I applaud Eisenberg’s imagination that imbued his cast of characters on the tour, including a divorcé from Brooklyn and a Jewish convert who survived the Rwandan genocide. The central conflict of this movie is not man vs man, it’s Caden Cotard vs himself. No scheme, doctor or chance to start over can remedy the fact that “we’re all hurtling towards death”.
