  Hackman deserved Best Actor, but I'm puzzled that this landed Best Picture. The film is great, all cat & mouse, trash era NYC, and character building. Popeye Doyle is a loathsome brute: beating suspects, picking-up teenagers, waking up at bars, and shooting FBI men. A racist dog who only perks up at the whiffs of a hot case.   What more can even be said. Slow-mo of Tequila and Tony crossing up each other in the halls. Babies on a escape rope. Slamming the drink on the bar before downing. Shotgun kills.
