Okay, edited for more thoughts:
One of my most anticipated films of the year, but I found it so… meh? Based on my criticisms below, you’d think I would give this one star, but some of the shots were seriously breathtaking, and I enjoyed/was adequately horrified by many of the scenes individually. Dread permeated this and kept me hooked, so it definitely gets points for tone and atmosphere.
Anyway, lots of incredible pieces that don’t quite come together for me.…

I am so in awe of the way this film depicted the interplay between the worldly and the spiritual—between the living and the dead—between the desire to find and possess what we can of the earth and the desire to stand in awe of things greater than ourselves. Do we seek to control what we can, or do we go on seeking something utterly intangible, forever? The inability to accept or channel these human contradictions in healthy ways ultimately results…
