SLY LIVES! (aka The Burden of Black Genius) 2025
Thought this was great! I went in knowing the music from Sly's classic run in the 60s and 70s, but didn't know much about the troubled and drug-addled decades that followed. Questlove's knowledge, skill, and rolodox make him uniquely suited to create a documentary like this. Even the standard talking head interviews here are superb. Too on the nose to have André 3000 and D'Angelo discuss a reclusive black musical genius? I don't know, but the results are insightful and entertaining.

This documentary starts with some pretty heavy early 90s PBS vibes and I worried it would be a slog, but before long we're alongside Ellsworth as he's walking through the streets of Paris telling us old stories. The best moments come when he is tracing some of the most iconic shapes in his work back to the objects that originally inspired them. A crushed soda can found in upstate New York, a large window at MoMa, an oddly shaped wall…
