The Last Picture Show 1971
Growing up in a small, dying Texas town haunted by the ghosts of the generations before and the generations that’ll be stuck there in the future is as melancholy as it gets. The only solace is straining to find love and connection with whomever you can find it with. But when nobody in this town knows how to even friggin kiss let alone have sex it makes it all the more depressing. Good god, someone get this town a porno magazine or a video or a sex therapist or anything to teach these sad sacks how to do it.

Tony Gilroy is a master of his craft. I can listen to his monologues forever.

It’s impossible to not let what’s going on in Majors’ personal life bleed into this film while you watch. For better or worse it makes his relentless, sick, obsessive, tormented, awkward, damaged performance all the more personal and compelling. It’s a heavy load to bear as an audience member. And what makes it even heavier is that the movie itself stops at nothing to try and make you feel depressed as fuck.

Maybe Tony Scott at his purest. An action movie with barely any action. Just two dudes stuck in a submarine arguing over their philosophies on The Art of War.
I mean this as a compliment - Gene Hackman has played some of the best republican characters, both protagonists and antagonists, in movie history. RIP.
