The absolute peak of paranoia. Fittingly, every aspect of the sound (score, editing, design, silence) is pitch-perfect.

Look, I want more movies this innovative & unique as well. But this is WEIRD – it's tonally obtuse, politically charged, & visually bonkers….of course it bombed. Still, even though this is decidedly lesser-Bong, lesser-Bong is still wildly enjoyable & thoughtful. Pattinson rules, & he's surrounded by genius performers in boldly funny turns. It's a messy, admirable vision with too many big ideas & not enough focus but tons of entertaining originality.

The only OG Star Trek film that really doesn’t work at all. Shatner is great when he’s on a leash, but his instincts behind and in front of the camera here just come off as arrogant and awkward. The story is stiff, the visuals are unimaginative, and God/heaven stuff is uncharacteristically hacky for this franchise. I do think Spock is good, and I laughed at the ship not working properly…but theology and Star Trek don’t mix.

It is not easy to successfully make a fantasy-biopic, but Jackson nails it with his visceral eye and personal tone. The true story of two young best friends whose relationship grows dark is a truly breathtaking breath of fresh air. The performances and script are funny, somber and disturbing, all the while managing to stay warm. Bold and brave, complex and horrifying, difficult and rewarding, Heavenly Creatures is cooler and angstier than a costume drama usually is.

Here’s a shocker! Haneke makes a frigid cold mystery that is, while intriguing, too ambiguous and dry to really grasp onto. It’s not a disaster; there is some uniqueness to the plotting and some funny-ish characters, but nothing to stave off the boredom. In one scene, the main character is fighting off falling asleep while another character drones on. Sadly, I could relate.
