  One of the true rosetta stones… Hitch knew filmmaking like a fish knows water.

  Just wish more modern filmmakers would crib that lighting, that editing rhythm… or simple, effective shots like this one. That’s the stuff that set him apart from the rest, even though he was just as enamored with his crazy oners and camera tricks.

  Late era Hitch was committed to making the violence, food, and actors look as ugly (read: British) as possible. His commitment to having no faith or trust in police never wavered.

  Sheesh. This is Kitano’s first movie as director, and easily his most bleak and upsetting that I’ve seen to date. More upsetting than his two most famous pictures which both end with him committing suicide. More upsetting than Outrage, which features more extreme, elaborate violence but of a commercial sort, comically grotesque and reeking of a man in dire need of a paycheck.
