The King Tide 2023
I have seen complaints that this is too slow, which I can understand. Of course, different paces work for different people. That said, I loved how slow and moody this film is. Holy shit, I love Robert Eggers. What still strikes me about this film is the generational conflict intersecting with masculinity. Willem Dafoe's character condescends to Robert Pattinson's as an experienced lighthouse keeper to the know-nothing, petulant newcomer. Dafoe's character sees Pattinson as a burden who doesn't appreciate his hard work (i.e. his cooking). To put it lightly, I sensed a very Baby Boomer vs. Millennial/Gen Z conflict here, distilled in crystalline black-and-white.
