Artfully made and beautifully acted, but surprisingly shallow. The ending proposes a central mystery around the 'why' of it all, but the previous two hours didn't feel like a mystery at all. Just a lot of misery.

I don’t normally use Letterboxd to write reviews for films. I’m a filmmaker; not a critic, so apologies if this review is a bit rambling. The more that I read about this film, the more convinced I became that I needed to put my own thoughts down on the record, if only for my own benefit.

I should probably begin this review by admitting that I watched ‘Taxi Driver’ most recently in film class, so my perception of it right now is largely framed around its relationship with Italian Neo-Realism, French New-Wave and the film-school generation's impact on Hollywood. However, I’d hazard a guess that most aren't interested in the allusions to Fellini or Godard in Scorcese’s direction (apparently that Alka-Seltzer shot is a goldmine for film history buffs).
