    The Menu

    ★★½

While offering an interesting critique of the upper class, and the inherent pretension of art, The Menu struggles when it comes to having any real emotional hook outside of The blunt symbolism of the burger.

The characters are vapid serving as little more than symbols. Through these characters, it seemingly wants to imitate something like The Discreet Charm of The Borgoise. They are little more than archetypes to support the central thesis of the plot. The only real intrigue is…

    My Neighbor Totoro

    ★★★★½

It's impressive how a supposedly miserable old man can produce works so full of childlike wonder. Miyazaki explores the imagination of a Child almost as if he were one.

Almost completely conflictless until the last 15 minutes, with a untraditional plot structure. Nothing is explained, nothing is setup. yet somehow Miyazaki manages to make a consise and understandable simple film. Truly an impressive feat no doubt.

Expressive, beautifully animated, and joyous till the very end my neighbor totoro is an animated classic for a reason
