This film is effectively a cultural victory lap for America and the French Resistance in the twilight years of the second World War; an American boat captain of dubious morality operating out of Vichy France-controlled Martinique smuggles Resistance personnel onto the island while evading VERY French fascists. It kind of watches like a piece of WW2 alt history fiction that asks "what if the Americans were secretly never neutral?" This is Lauren Bacall's film debut and she is just delightful!…
