I sobbed through all the stuff about Snape even though I already knew it all.
I like this movie, but my continual complaint is that the romantic relationships don’t work. They don’t work. This movie is about friendship and community and I don’t want to see anymore teenagers pairing up in awkward relationships that don’t seem real but allegedly last forever.
I remember this movie as being the first to really raise the stakes in the Harry Potter series. I think that holds up now, with some real darkness and more adult themes.
My one complaint is that the tonal shifts are weird at times. The two parallel plots are excessive and awkward teen love alongside the rise of the Dark Lord. It doesn’t always fit together or feel balanced.
Heavy on visuals with no narration. I think the more interesting parts of the film for me were old clips of Americans learning how to “duck and cover” or to wash off radiation with water. Moments where the fear-based propaganda of it all really show the cultural impact and the origins of our feeling that these types of weapons are necessary.
I enjoyed this movie overall, and I learned many things that I want to look into more. But it was very long and occasionally hard to follow.
