A profoundly beautiful little film.
This is not Miyazaki’s most impressive work. For a man known for stunning visuals and fantastical settings (like the ones found in his most famous works), The Wind Rises might almost seem tame.
However, it might be Miyazaki’s most beautiful work. Miyazaki doesn’t need a fantastical setting to produce beautiful visuals and an affecting story. This film deals with themes of ambition, dreams, love, and the sacrifices one must endure to pursue them.
It is simply must watch cinema.

If you’re a fan of Shane Black, you’ll like this film.
Aesthetically, The Nice Guys is absolutely dripping in 70s nostalgia, in regards to the mise en scene, and the way it’s shot. The long zooms Black employs callback to 70s cinematography just as much as the costumes and set decoration.
